VietBonsai in Hobsons Bay
According to Mental health and wellbeing in Hobsons Bay’s research report, the global incidence of mental illness is growing. It is estimated that by 2030, depression will be one of the world’s leading causes of disease (VicHealth, 2007). One in three Australians will experience a mental illness during their lives (Commonwealth Government, 2012). Latest figures from the Victorian Population Health Survey (2008) showed that 13 per cent of the total population in Hobsons Bay, sought professional help for a mental health problem in the previous 12 months, above the Victorian average of 11.4 per cent. The survey also showed that approximately 11 per cent of the Hobsons Bay population suffers from high to very high levels of psychological distress (Department of Health and Human Services, 2011b).
The Vietnamese Association in Hobsons Bay has the desire and wisdom to change that result by provide members and community a place-based focus on achieving social, environmental and economic results that improve people’s health and wellbeing.
With the funding support from Hobsons Bay Community Fund, we have been able to run ten workshops on Mindulness with Bonsai since September 2018. The project is about to complete and we are greatful for their support.
